TS EAMCET vs AP EAPCET 2026 – Key Differences

How TS EAMCET and AP EAPCET differ since the 2014 Telangana-Andhra Pradesh bifurcation — conducting bodies, quotas, and process.

Background: One Exam Became Two

Before 2014, EAMCET (Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test) was a single, unified exam for the combined state of Andhra Pradesh. Following the bifurcation that created the separate state of Telangana in June 2014, both successor states set up independent higher education councils and began conducting their own versions of the exam — TS EAMCET for Telangana and AP EAPCET for residual Andhra Pradesh — from the following academic cycles onward.

Mutual Reservation Quota Between TS and AP

Given the shared history and several colleges that predate the 2014 split, both states have historically maintained provisions for a small mutual reservation quota — allowing candidates from the other state to be considered for a limited share of seats in specific institutions, outside the general non-local/other-state pool. The exact percentage and eligible colleges are notified separately by each state's council and can change; always verify current-year details on the official TSCHE or APSCHE counselling portal.

Which One Should You Appear For?

If you are a resident of, or studying in, Telangana and targeting Telangana colleges (JNTU Hyderabad, Osmania, CBIT, VNRVJIET), TS EAMCET is your primary exam. If you are targeting Andhra Pradesh colleges (JNTU Kakinada, Andhra University, SV University), AP EAPCET is the relevant exam. Many students eligible for both (based on study history) choose to appear for both to maximize their college options across the two states.

Frequently Asked Questions – TS EAMCET vs AP EAPCET

Common queries comparing TS EAMCET and AP EAPCET 2026

1
Why are TS EAMCET and AP EAPCET separate exams?
After the state of Andhra Pradesh was bifurcated into Telangana and residual Andhra Pradesh in 2014, higher education administration was also split. Telangana set up TSCHE (Telangana State Council of Higher Education) with TS EAMCET conducted by JNTU Hyderabad, while Andhra Pradesh set up APSCHE (AP State Council of Higher Education) with AP EAPCET conducted by JNTU Kakinada. Since then, they have run as fully independent exams and counselling systems.
2
Can a TS EAMCET candidate get admission in an AP college and vice versa?
Generally, each exam's counselling covers only colleges within its own state, and candidates from the other state are treated as non-local/other-state candidates competing for the open quota. However, both states have historically maintained a mutual reservation quota (a small percentage of seats) for candidates from the other state in certain colleges, particularly in institutions with a shared legacy pre-bifurcation.
3
Is the exam pattern different between TS EAMCET and AP EAPCET?
The core structure — Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (or Biology for agriculture/medical stream) — is broadly similar since both trace back to the original combined AP EAPCET. However, question patterns, difficulty calibration, and exact syllabus emphasis can differ slightly year to year since each state's council sets its own exam independently.
4
Do TS EAMCET and AP EAPCET have different local-area reservation rules?
Yes. Each state defines its own local-area/local-candidate criteria for reservation within its counselling. Telangana's local status is generally based on years of study within Telangana districts, while Andhra Pradesh applies its own residence/study-based criteria for AP local status. A candidate can be 'local' in one state and 'non-local' in the other simultaneously.
5
Which exam should I choose if I studied in Hyderabad but I'm from Andhra Pradesh?
Local status is generally determined by where you studied (not just where your family is originally from), so if you completed the qualifying years of schooling in Telangana, you may be eligible for Telangana local status for TS EAMCET counselling even if your family hails from Andhra Pradesh. It's best to check both states' official local-status criteria carefully, and many students in this situation are eligible to appear for both exams.
