Choice Filling

Can I Add the Same College for Different Branches?

Yes — and you should. Each college+branch is a separate choice. Here is how to use this correctly.

The Answer: YES

Each Branch = A Separate Choice

NIT Trichy CSE and NIT Trichy ECE are completely independent choices. You must add them separately to rank them.

In JoSAA, a "choice" is defined by three things: Institute + Branch/Programme + Seat Type. Different branches at the same institute are entirely different choices with different cutoff ranks, different seats, and different allotments.

Example: NIT Trichy Choice List

A student who wants NIT Trichy, open to any branch, could add:

#3
NIT Trichy – CSE – OP
#7
NIT Trichy – ECE – OP
#11
NIT Trichy – EEE – OP
#15
NIT Trichy – Mechanical – OP
#19
NIT Trichy – Civil – OP

* Numbers represent position in the complete choice list (which may have 30–50+ total entries across multiple institutes).

Key Choice Filling Rules

  • 1.Put your dream combination first — the system always tries to give you the highest-preference option you qualify for.
  • 2.Add aspirational choices above your expected rank — cutoffs can ease, especially in later rounds.
  • 3.Do not waste choices by leaving obvious combinations out. If you'd happily attend NIT Warangal Mechanical, add it.
  • 4.There is no penalty for adding too many choices. Add everything you'd genuinely accept.
  • 5.You cannot add the same Institute + Branch + Seat Type combination twice — only different branches or seat types.

1
Can I add the same NIT for CSE, ECE, and Mechanical all in my JoSAA choice list?
Yes, absolutely. You can and should add the same NIT for every branch you would be willing to study. NIT Trichy CSE, NIT Trichy ECE, and NIT Trichy Mechanical are three completely separate choices in JoSAA. They have different cutoffs, different seat pools, and different allotment outcomes. Adding all three of them is standard and recommended practice.
2
How should I order the same college with different branches in my list?
Order them based on your genuine branch preference. If you strongly prefer CSE over ECE, place CSE higher (smaller choice number) than ECE. If ECE and CSE are both good options but you prefer NIT Trichy overall, you might have: NIT Trichy CSE, NIT Trichy ECE, NIT Warangal CSE, NIT Trichy Mechanical. The system will allot you the highest-priority choice you qualify for.
3
Is there a limit on how many times I can add the same college?
You can add the same college as many times as it has different branches/programmes. There's no artificial restriction. If NIT Trichy has 8 branches, you could technically add all 8 as separate choices — though in practice you'd only add branches you'd actually want to study. JoSAA allows up to several hundred total choices, so space is not an issue.
4
What if I add NIT Trichy CSE at position 5 and NIT Trichy ECE at position 12 — which do I get?
JoSAA always tries to give you the highest-preference choice possible. If NIT Trichy CSE (position 5) is within your rank's eligibility, you get it and choices 6–onwards are not considered. If CSE is out of range but ECE (position 12) is within range, you get ECE. The system scans from choice #1 downward and gives you the first choice where you qualify.
5
Should I also add the same IIT for different branches?
Yes, the same logic applies to IITs. If you would be happy studying ECE, Mechanical, or Chemical at IIT Bombay, add all three at their respective preference levels. However, be mindful that IIT Bombay CSE closes around rank 67 and Mechanical around rank 2,000 — so only add choices that are realistically within your rank range, or intentionally aspirational.
