JoSAA 2026 Age Limit – Is There an Upper Age Limit?

IITs have a strict age cap. NITs, IIITs & GFTIs don't. Here's exactly what applies to you.

Age Limit at a Glance

Institute TypeGeneral / OBCSC / ST / PwD
IITs (all 23)25 years (born ≥ Oct 1, 2001)30 years (born ≥ Oct 1, 1996)
NITs (all 31)No upper age limitNo upper age limit

IIT Age Limit – The Details

For admission to any IIT through JoSAA 2026, you must satisfy the JEE Advanced 2026 eligibility criteria, which includes an upper age limit set by the IIT Council:

  • •General / OBC-NCL / EWS: Maximum 25 years of age as on October 1, 2026. You must have been born on or after October 1, 2001.
  • •SC / ST / PwD: Maximum 30 years of age as on October 1, 2026. You must have been born on or after October 1, 1996.
  • •The age limit is checked at the time of JEE Advanced 2026 registration — if you didn't qualify JEE Advanced due to age, you cannot apply to IITs through JoSAA regardless of your JEE Main rank.
Note: The age limit for IITs is enforced at the JEE Advanced stage. If you were ineligible for JEE Advanced due to age, you will only be eligible for NITs/IIITs/GFTIs through JEE Main rank.

NITs, IIITs & GFTIs – No Age Limit

There is currently no upper age limit for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA 2026 or JEE Main 2026. This applies to all categories.

JEE Main 2026 itself does not specify any upper age limit for appearing in the exam. The National Testing Agency (NTA) removed the age cap for JEE Main several years ago. As a result, any candidate who has passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026 can apply to NITs/IIITs/GFTIs regardless of age.

Good news for droppers: Even if you are a 2-year dropper, there is absolutely no age barrier for NIT/IIIT/GFTI admission as long as you cleared Class 12 in 2025 or 2026.

Class 12 Pass Year Requirement for JoSAA 2026

For JoSAA 2026, you must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2025 or 2026. This requirement applies to all institutes (IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs).

1
What is the upper age limit for IITs in JoSAA 2026?
For general category candidates, the upper age limit for IIT admission through JoSAA 2026 is 25 years as on October 1, 2026. This means you must have been born on or after October 1, 2001. SC, ST, and PwD candidates get a 5-year relaxation, so their upper age limit is 30 years (born on or after October 1, 1996).
2
Is there an age limit for NITs and IIITs in JoSAA 2026?
No. NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs participating in JoSAA 2026 do NOT have any upper age limit. Any candidate who has passed Class 12 and has a valid JEE Main 2026 rank can apply to these institutes regardless of age. This is a key distinction from IITs.
3
I am a dropper student appearing in JEE 2026. Am I within the age limit for IITs?
Most dropper students (1–2 year gap after Class 12) are well within the 25-year age limit. If you passed Class 12 in 2024 and are appearing in JEE 2026, you are almost certainly eligible. The age limit only becomes a concern for candidates who are significantly older. Check your birth date against October 1, 2001 cutoff for General/OBC, or October 1, 1996 for SC/ST/PwD.
4
What is the Class 12 pass year requirement for JoSAA 2026?
For JoSAA 2026 counselling, candidates must have passed Class 12 (or equivalent) in 2025 or 2026. Students who passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier are generally NOT eligible, as JEE Main/Advanced 2026 itself requires Class 12 in 2025 or 2026. The Class 12 year and JEE attempt year rules are linked — always check the official JEE 2026 eligibility notification.
5
Where is the official JoSAA 2026 age limit rule published?
The official age limit rules are published in the JEE Advanced 2026 Information Brochure (for IIT eligibility) and the JoSAA 2026 official information brochure available at josaa.nic.in. The age limit for IITs is set by the IIT Council and applies to JEE Advanced qualifiers. For NITs/IIITs/GFTIs, the age eligibility follows JEE Main rules, which currently have no upper age cap.
