What Are GFTIs in CSAB 2026?

GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) are engineering colleges that receive central government funding but are not NITs or IIITs. About 33 GFTIs participate in JoSAA and CSAB. They include some of India's oldest and most respected institutions alongside newer specialized institutes.

GFTIs offer a strong value proposition: government-level fees, central government affiliation, and in many cases, industry connections developed over decades. IIEST Shibpur (est. 1856) and BIT Mesra (est. 1955) are GFTI alumni-heavy in PSUs, core industries, and IT.

Since many GFTIs are less well-known compared to NITs, their seats are sometimes available in CSAB even after 5 JoSAA rounds. This makes CSAB a valuable second chance for candidates targeting GFTIs.

Is IIEST Shibpur a good option in CSAB 2026?
IIEST Shibpur (Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur) is one of the oldest engineering colleges in Asia, established in 1856. It is a GFTI under JoSAA/CSAB and has strong placements in the IT sector, PSUs (BHEL, ONGC, NTPC), and core engineering. CSE at IIEST closes around 8,000–10,000 in general (other state) category — competitive even for JoSAA standards.

What is the fee structure at GFTIs under CSAB?
GFTIs are government-funded, so annual tuition fees are relatively low — typically ₹20,000–₹80,000 per year. Hostel and mess charges add ₹50,000–₹1,50,000. Total annual cost at most GFTIs ranges from ₹70,000 to ₹2,50,000. The seat acceptance fee for CSAB (₹30,000 for General/OBC/EWS, ₹15,000 for SC/ST) is deducted from the first year's fee on joining.

How do GFTI cutoffs in CSAB compare to NIT cutoffs?
For established GFTIs like IIEST Shibpur, cutoffs are comparable to mid-tier NITs (rank 6,000–12,000 for CSE general). For newer or less prominent GFTIs, cutoffs are significantly more relaxed. On average, a GFTI CSE seat is available at 1.5–2x higher rank than an equivalent NIT CSE seat. GFTIs are excellent value for candidates who miss NITs narrowly.

Can I change my GFTI choice after CSAB Round 1 allotment?
In CSAB, there is no Float/Freeze/Surrender mechanism like JoSAA. CSAB typically has 2 rounds, and in Round 1 you receive an allotment. If you accept and participate in Round 2, you can potentially get a better option. However, CSAB's choice modification is more limited than JoSAA. It is best to fill choices in strict order of preference before the deadline.
