How the CSAB SR1 Predictor Works

The CSAB SR1 predictor takes your JEE Main 2026 rank, category (General/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS/PwD), and gender, and matches them against historical CSAB special-round closing-rank data across NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. SR1 drew from a fresh, full vacancy pool (published at registration on July 28) and its result was declared August 6, 2026. SR2, the final round of CSAB 2026, was declared August 12, 2026 — the predictor remains useful as a reference for future CSAB cycles.

Unlike JoSAA, where you're competing across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs simultaneously (135+ institutes), CSAB SR1 only involves NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs — a smaller, more specific pool of roughly 114 institutes as CSAB expands in 2026 with 9 new GFTIs added. This narrower field means the predictor's historical data is more directly comparable year-to-year for CSAB specifically, rather than diluted by IIT-specific ranks.

One nuance worth understanding: SR1 seat availability is not evenly distributed. Newer institutes (NIT Andhra Pradesh, NIT Meghalaya, NIT Puducherry, various IIITs under the PPP model) and less-common branches (Civil, Metallurgical, Textile, Mining) make up the bulk of SR1 vacancies, while CSE/ECE at established NITs like NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, or NIT Warangal are almost never available — JoSAA typically exhausts these completely across its 5 rounds.

Run the predictor with a realistic mindset: if your JEE Main rank was borderline for JoSAA's Round 5 cutoffs at NITs, CSAB SR1 is a strong next step. If your rank was significantly beyond even the most relaxed JoSAA Round 5 cutoffs, temper expectations and also evaluate GFTIs, private colleges, or state counselling in parallel — don't rely on CSAB alone.

What Happened After SR1 Concluded

1

SR1 result declared

The SR1 result was declared August 6, 2026, with reporting open August 6–11.

2

Freeze/float decisions

Allotted candidates chose to freeze their seat or float for a possible upgrade in SR2, paying the seat acceptance fee within the SR1 reporting window.

3

SR2 result declared

SR2, the final round of CSAB 2026, was declared August 12, 2026, with reporting open August 12–17.

4

CSAB 2026 counselling complete

With SR2 reporting closed, CSAB 2026 centralized counselling has concluded — there is no SR3.

5

Next steps if unallotted

Candidates without a seat can look into institute-level spot admissions run independently by individual colleges.

SR1 Strategy Tips

  • Target newer NITs and GFTIs realistically — CSE/ECE at established NITs almost never has SR1 vacancies.
  • Don't skip lesser-known branches like Metallurgical or Textile Engineering — placement outcomes at reputed institutes can still be strong.
  • Compare SR1 predictions with SR2 patterns before deciding to accept immediately or wait — see our dedicated SR1 vs SR2 comparison.
  • Verify eligibility first — not everyone who did JoSAA automatically qualifies for CSAB; check our SR1 eligibility criteria page.

CSAB SR1 College Predictor – FAQs

Common questions about CSAB Special Round 1 2026 seat predictions

1
What is CSAB Special Round 1 (SR1) 2026?
CSAB SR1 is the first of two special counselling rounds conducted by the Central Seat Allocation Board after JoSAA 2026's five rounds concluded. It fills NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats that remained vacant after JoSAA Round 5 (July 16, 2026). Following registration (July 28–Aug 3), mock allotment (July 31), and choice locking (August 5), the SR1 result was declared on August 6, 2026, with SR1 reporting running August 6–11, 2026.
2
How accurate is the CSAB SR1 college predictor?
The predictor uses historical CSAB special-round closing ranks (from previous years' SR1/SR2 data) matched against your JEE Main rank, category, and gender. It's a strong directional estimate — usually accurate within a reasonable rank band — but actual SR1 closing ranks depend on that year's specific vacancy count, which varies based on how many candidates withdrew from JoSAA-allotted seats. Treat predictions as a planning guide, not a guarantee.
3
Which institutes are covered in CSAB SR1?
CSAB covers NITs (31 institutes), IIITs (25 institutes, including newer PPP-model IIITs), and GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes — 33 and growing, with 9 new ones reportedly added for 2026, taking the total closer to 114 institutes combined). IITs do NOT participate in CSAB at all — IIT seats are allocated exclusively through JoSAA.
4
What rank do I need for a good branch in CSAB SR1?
It depends heavily on the institute tier. Top NITs like NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, or NIT Surathkal rarely have CSE/ECE seats available even in SR1, since JoSAA typically fills these completely by Round 5. Your realistic SR1 targets are usually newer NITs (Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand), GFTIs, or less-common branches like Civil, Chemical, Metallurgical, or Textile Engineering at otherwise reputed institutes.
5
Should I register for CSAB even if I already have a JoSAA seat?
Only if you plan to upgrade. If you already accepted and froze a JoSAA seat and wanted to try CSAB instead, you needed to formally withdraw during the NIT+ withdrawal window (July 16–20, 2026) before becoming CSAB-eligible — you could not hold both a JoSAA seat and participate in CSAB simultaneously. That withdrawal window and CSAB registration (which closed August 3, 2026) have both passed for this cycle.
6
What documents do I need for CSAB SR1 reporting?
Typically the same set used for JoSAA: JEE Main 2026 admit card and scorecard, Class 10 and 12 marksheets/certificates, category certificate (if applicable, issued after a specified date), income/EWS certificate where relevant, PwD certificate if applicable, passport-size photographs, and a valid photo ID. Keep both physical and scanned copies ready, since CSAB reporting may combine online reporting with physical verification at the allotted institute.
7
What happens if I don't get a seat in SR1?
You were automatically carried forward into CSAB Special Round 2 (SR2) without needing to re-register. The SR2 result was declared August 12, 2026, with SR2 reporting running August 12–17, and this was the final round of CSAB 2026 — there is no SR3. If you were not allotted in SR2 either, CSAB 2026 counselling has now concluded for you; consider institute-level spot admissions run independently by colleges as a next step.
