Can You Change Category After CSAB 2026 Registration?
Understanding why category changes are generally not permitted after registration, and what to do if you have a genuine error.
The General Rule: Category Is Locked Early
As per typical JoSAA/CSAB business rules, a candidate's category — General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, or ST, along with any PwD flag — originates from the declaration made at the JEE Main application stage. This data carries forward automatically into JoSAA and subsequently into CSAB, since all three systems draw from the same central candidate database maintained by NTA. Once this data feeds into the counselling merit lists and seat matrix, especially after choice locking, changing your fundamental category classification is generally not permitted, because doing so would retroactively disrupt rank lists, seat reservation calculations, and other candidates' legitimate expectations already built into the ongoing process.
This is an intentional design choice across nearly all large-scale, rank-based counselling systems in India — allowing late category changes would open the door to strategic misuse and undermine the fairness of the merit-based allocation process.
Genuine Errors vs Attempted Category Switches
It's important to distinguish between two very different situations. A genuine clerical error — for instance, a typo where the wrong category option was accidentally selected on the JEE Main form — may sometimes be correctable if raised immediately through NTA's official correction window (if still open) or through the JoSAA/CSAB grievance/helpdesk process, ideally well before choice locking. The earlier such an error is flagged with supporting documentation, the better the chance of resolution.
In contrast, attempting to declare a category for the first time at the CSAB stage that wasn't present in your original JEE Main record — or trying to switch categories to gain a strategic advantage — is not treated as a correction and is not permitted under standard counselling rules.
What Happens During Document Verification
Even if your category was correctly declared, your reservation claim can still be rejected at document verification if your certificate doesn't properly support it — for instance, an OBC certificate lacking the required non-creamy-layer declaration, or a certificate that falls outside the required validity period. This is why it's essential to have your category certificate requirements in order well before registration, rather than assuming any issue can be fixed later.
If your reservation claim is rejected during verification, you are typically still considered under your default/unreserved status for that specific seat, which means the seat allotment would only hold if you separately meet the General/CRL cutoff.
