Karnataka KCET Reservation Structure

Karnataka has a unique multi-tier OBC reservation system. The state recognizes over 200 backward communities across five categories (Cat-1, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B) beyond the standard SC and ST reservations. Karnataka government seats have 50%+ reservation for various categories.

For KCET 2026, the Karnataka government has maintained the 50% OBC, SC, ST combined reservation as per the Karnataka Backward Classes Act. Candidates must obtain category certificates from Karnataka authorities to claim category benefits — other state certificates are not valid.

Frequently Asked Questions – KCET Category-wise College Predictor

Common questions about KCET 2026 category-wise reservation and college prediction

1
What KCET rank does an SC candidate need for RVCE CSE in 2026?
RVCE Bangalore CSE SC category closing rank in KCET 2025 was approximately 3,000–6,000 (SC merit rank). SC candidates compete within the SC reservation pool. Since RVCE has about 15% SC reservation seats, a significantly lower KCET score/rank qualifies for SC category compared to GM (general merit) which requires rank ~1,000–3,000.
2
What are the OBC categories in Karnataka KCET?
Karnataka KCET has multiple OBC categories: Category-2A (includes communities like Veerashaivas, Vokkaligas — 15%), Category-2B (Muslim OBC — 4%), Category-3A (Brahmins, Lingayats, and other communities — 3.5%), Category-3B (other OBC communities — 5%). Each category has a separate merit list and reservation in Karnataka government colleges.
3
How does KCET category certification work for OBC candidates?
OBC candidates for KCET must obtain a valid caste/category certificate from Karnataka authority (taluk/sub-divisional magistrate). The certificate must specify the Karnataka OBC category (2A, 2B, 3A, or 3B). Income certificate may also be required for some OBC sub-categories. Certificates must be current (not older than 3 years as per KEA guidelines). Out-of-state OBC certificates are generally not valid for Karnataka KCET category seats.
4
Can SC/ST candidates from other states apply for Karnataka KCET SC/ST category seats?
Generally, SC/ST category benefits in Karnataka KCET are available for Karnataka-domicile SC/ST candidates. Out-of-state SC/ST students may not be eligible for Karnataka-specific SC/ST category seats. However, they can appear for KCET under the GM (General Merit) category or the OPS (Other than Karnataka Students) quota which has limited seats at participating institutions.
5
What is Category-1 in Karnataka KCET and who is eligible?
Category-1 in Karnataka KCET is a reservation for economically backward classes — communities not covered under SC/ST/OBC but identified as economically weak by the Karnataka government. It typically includes communities like Brahmins (some groups), certain minorities, and specific trade/artisan communities. The reservation is 4% in government seats. Caste certificate from Karnataka authorities is required.
