Why GFTIs Extend Access So Much Further

GFTIs (Government Funded Technical Institutes) are state or centrally-supported engineering colleges that participate in JoSAA/CSAB counselling alongside NITs and IIITs, but generally carry less brand recognition and demand than the major NITs. Because demand is lower, especially for institutes in less metro-centric locations or newer campuses, their closing ranks extend dramatically further down the merit list.

This is exactly why a candidate with a rank far beyond typical NIT/IIIT range (which in 2026 averaged around 28,877 for NITs and 37,031 for IIITs) can still find a genuine seat — sometimes in a reasonable branch — through the GFTI route, either directly in JoSAA rounds or via CSAB's dedicated special rounds for unfilled seats.
