About NIT Patna

National Institute of Technology Patna (NIT Patna), established in 1886 as Bihar College of Engineering and later converted to NIT status in 2004, is one of the oldest engineering institutions in India. Located in Patna, the capital city of Bihar, the institute has a rich heritage spanning over 130 years.

NIT Patna offers B.Tech in Computer Science, ECE, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, and Architecture. The institute is known for its strong academic traditions. Bihar produces a large number of JEE qualifiers annually, making NIT Patna a highly sought-after destination for Bihar students. Home State seats are therefore competitive despite the 50% HS quota.

The institute has been modernising its campus and placement processes. For JoSAA 2026, NIT Patna follows the standard 50% Home State (Bihar) and 50% Other State quota. JoSAA 2026 begins June 2, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about NIT Patna admissions and cutoffs

1
What is the expected CSE cutoff for NIT Patna in 2026?
Based on 2025 JoSAA Round 6 trends, NIT Patna CSE closing rank for General (Other State) is expected around 20,000–27,000 CRL. For Home State (Bihar) General candidates, it may close around 16,000–21,000. Bihar produces a large number of JEE qualified students, making HS seats quite competitive too.
2
Why is NIT Patna's Home State cutoff competitive despite Bihar quota?
Bihar is one of the largest states in India by population and produces a very large number of JEE qualifiers every year (Bihar and Jharkhand combined send significant numbers). As a result, NIT Patna's Home State seats — despite being 50% of total seats — are highly competitive, with HS closing ranks not far behind OS ranks in popular branches.
3
What is NIT Patna's NIRF ranking?
NIT Patna is typically ranked in the 60–80 range among engineering institutes in NIRF rankings. It is a mid-tier NIT with improving infrastructure and placement records. The institute is located in Patna, the state capital of Bihar.
4
Which branches at NIT Patna have the best placement records?
Computer Science and ECE have the best placement records at NIT Patna, with multiple top IT companies recruiting. Mechanical and Electrical branches also see PSU recruitment. Average package for CSE is typically Rs 8–14 LPA with some getting Rs 20–35 LPA from product companies.
5
Is NIT Patna better than NIT Jamshedpur or NIT Durgapur?
NIT Patna, NIT Jamshedpur, and NIT Durgapur are roughly comparable mid-tier NITs with similar cutoffs in the 15,000–30,000 range for CSE (OS General). Preferences generally come down to location, branch, and campus environment. NIT Durgapur may have a slight edge due to proximity to Kolkata. NIT Patna is centrally located in Bihar, making it convenient for Bihar candidates.
