NIT Cutoff: Home State vs Other State Quota 2026

Understand HS & OS quota · Which state benefits · Strategy for choice filling

Data below is based on JoSAA 2025 (Round 6, final closing ranks) and is approximate for reference. NIT 2026 cutoffs will be announced during JoSAA 2026 counselling. Verify on josaa.nic.in.

What is Home State vs Other State Quota?

Home State (HS) Quota

  • 50% of NIT seats
  • Reserved for candidates from NIT's state
  • Higher closing rank numbers (easier)
  • Only home state candidates compete
  • Example: TN candidates at NIT Trichy

Other State (OS) Quota

  • 50% of NIT seats
  • Open to all states (including home state)
  • Lower closing rank numbers (harder)
  • All non-home-state candidates compete
  • Example: Non-TN candidates at NIT Trichy

Key Insight: Why OS closing rank is LOWER (harder)?

For NIT Trichy CSE: HS closing rank ~2,847 (only TN candidates compete for 50% seats) vs OS closing rank ~1,102 (all non-TN candidates across India compete for remaining 50%). More competition = lower closing rank number = harder to get in via OS.

Strategic Guide: When to Use HS Quota

1
Home state has a top NIT — Always prioritize HS quota if your home state has a top-tier NIT. Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, and Odisha students should strongly consider their home NIT first.
2
Compare HS at lower NIT vs OS at better NIT — If your rank is 8,000 and you're from Odisha, you can get NIT Rourkela CSE via HS (CR ~7,824). But if you have rank 5,000, you may also get NIT Calicut CSE via OS (CR ~2,741). Compare both options.
3
Home state with smaller NITs — If your home state has a newer/smaller NIT (NIT Meghalaya, NIT Arunachal, etc.), you might get a better branch at a mid-tier NIT via OS quota. Weigh NIT quality vs branch preference.
4
Branch vs college trade-off — At the same NIT, HS quota often lets you get a better branch than you'd get via OS quota. E.g., NIT Trichy CSE via HS for TN students vs NIT Trichy ECE via OS for non-TN students with the same rank.
1
How does NIT home state quota work?
50% of seats in each NIT are reserved as Home State (HS) quota for candidates whose state of eligibility matches the state where the NIT is located. For example, 50% of NIT Trichy seats are for Tamil Nadu candidates. The remaining 50% are Other State (OS) quota open to all.
2
Why are HS closing ranks higher numbers than OS closing ranks?
This seems counterintuitive. HS closing rank (e.g., 2,847) is a higher number than OS closing rank (e.g., 1,102). A higher rank number means a weaker candidate got in. This happens because HS quota is easier — only TN candidates compete for HS seats at NIT Trichy. More people with weaker ranks can get in via HS. OS quota is more competitive because candidates from all 28+ states compete for those seats.
3
Which state gets the most advantage from NIT home state quota?
States with top-tier NITs benefit most: Tamil Nadu (NIT Trichy #9), Telangana (NIT Warangal #12), and Karnataka (NIT Surathkal #14). A Tamil Nadu student can get NIT Trichy CSE with rank ~2,847 — much easier than the OS closing rank of ~1,102. Students from states without top NITs must compete in OS quota everywhere.
4
Can I choose OS quota instead of HS quota at my home state NIT?
No. JoSAA automatically assigns your state of eligibility. If you're from Tamil Nadu and apply to NIT Trichy, you compete under HS quota. You cannot voluntarily compete under OS quota at your home state's NIT.
5
When is it better to choose another NIT's OS quota over home NIT HS quota?
If your home NIT is lower-ranked (e.g., NIT Meghalaya), you might get a better education at a higher-tier NIT via OS quota (e.g., NIT Trichy, if your rank is good enough). Example: A student from Meghalaya with rank 15,000 might prefer NIT Silchar via OS (CR ~7,891) for CSE over NIT Meghalaya HS (CR ~45,000) for a better branch.
