What to Do After Getting NIT Seat in JoSAA 2026
Complete action plan — fee payment, document upload, Freeze/Float decision, physical reporting and CSAB upgrade option
Step 1: Pay the Seat Acceptance Fee Immediately
The very first thing you must do after getting an NIT seat in JoSAA is pay the seat acceptance fee within the deadline — typically 48 to 72 hours from allotment. Log in to josaa.nic.in, navigate to "Respond to Seat Allotment," and pay online via net banking, UPI, or debit/credit card.
| Category | Seat Acceptance Fee | Refundable? |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS | ₹45,000 | Adjusted against institute fees |
| OBC-NCL | ₹45,000 | Adjusted against institute fees |
| SC / ST | ₹20,000 | Adjusted against institute fees |
| PwD (all categories) | ₹20,000 | Adjusted against institute fees |
Note: Fees are NOT refundable if you withdraw from JoSAA after payment. Save your payment receipt carefully.
Step 2: Freeze, Float, or Slide — Making the Right Choice
After paying the fee, you must select your response mode. This is one of the most important decisions you will make during JoSAA counselling.
You are fully satisfied with your current NIT seat. Choose Freeze to exit all upgrade rounds. Your current allotment is confirmed. This is the safest option if you got your dream college and branch.
You want a better college or branch higher in your choice list. JoSAA will try to upgrade you in subsequent rounds. If no better seat is found, you retain your current NIT seat. Your current seat acts as a fallback.
You want a better branch within the SAME institute you are currently allotted. JoSAA tries to give you a higher-preferred branch at your current NIT. If no better branch is available, your current seat is retained.
Step 3: Upload Documents on JoSAA Portal
After paying the fee and selecting your response, upload all required documents on the JoSAA portal. Ensure documents are clear, legible, and in the correct format (usually PDF/JPEG under 100KB–200KB each).
Step 4: Physical Reporting at the NIT
After your final seat allotment (when you choose Freeze or the last round ends), you must physically report to the NIT within the reporting window. Missing this deadline means forfeiting your seat.
Documents to carry (originals + attested copies): All documents listed above, plus migration certificate from your Class 12 board, medical fitness certificate from a registered MBBS doctor, anti-ragging affidavit (available on NIT website), and first-year fee payment challan/demand draft.
NIT Annual Fee Structure 2026: Tuition fees at NITs range from ₹62,500 to ₹1,25,000 per year for General/OBC candidates. SC/ST candidates pay zero tuition at all NITs as per MHRD norms. Hostel + mess fees add another ₹60,000 to ₹1,20,000 per year depending on the NIT.
CSAB Option: If JoSAA ends and you still want an upgrade, CSAB counselling runs in August. You can participate in CSAB Special Round to try for a better NIT/IIIT seat. Check CSAB eligibility and rules carefully before applying.
