Frequently Asked Questions – NIT Colleges in India

Common questions about NITs and JoSAA admission

1
How many NITs are there in India?
There are 31 NITs (National Institutes of Technology) in India, one in almost every major state, all participating in JoSAA counselling and admitting students primarily via JEE Main rank.
2
Which is the best NIT in India?
NIT Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) is widely regarded as the top NIT, consistently ranking highest among NITs in NIRF and having the best closing ranks in JoSAA. Per JoSAA 2026 Round 5 data, the best NIT closing rank overall was 231 at NIT Calicut, with NIT Trichy, NIT Surathkal, NIT Warangal and NIT Rourkela also among the most competitive.
3
How are NITs admitted — JEE Main or JEE Advanced?
NITs admit students primarily through JEE Main scores via JoSAA counselling. JEE Advanced is only required for IITs; NITs, IIITs and GFTIs use JEE Main ranks (with a Home State / Other State quota system affecting seat allocation).
4
What is the Home State vs Other State quota in NITs?
Each NIT reserves the majority of its seats (typically 50%) for Home State candidates (students who completed Class 12 from that state) and the remaining for Other State candidates. This means the closing rank for a given NIT branch can differ significantly between home-state and other-state category.
5
Are all 31 NITs equally good?
No, there's meaningful variation in reputation, placements and closing ranks across NITs. Older, more established NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Rourkela, Calicut) generally have stronger outcomes than some of the newer NITs set up post-2010. However, most NITs still offer solid infrastructure and reasonable placement records.
