Centrally-Funded vs PPP-Model IIITs

India's IIIT ecosystem has two distinct categories. The original centrally-funded IIITs — IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Gwalior, IIIT Jabalpur, and IIIT Kancheepuram — were established directly by the central government and carry Institute of National Importance status under earlier legislation. These tend to be the most established, with longer track records and generally stronger placement outcomes.

The remaining IIITs follow the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model, funded jointly by the central government, the respective state government, and industry partners, under the IIIT (PPP) Act, 2017. Most IIITs established since 2016-17 — including IIIT Guwahati, IIIT Kota, IIIT Vadodara, IIIT Nagpur, and several others — fall in this category. Note that IIIT Hyderabad and IIIT Bangalore are autonomous institutes with their own separate admission processes and are NOT part of JoSAA.

Frequently Asked Questions – IIIT Colleges in India

Common questions about IIITs and their participation in JoSAA

1
How many IIITs are there in India?
There are 25 IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) participating in JoSAA counselling — a mix of centrally-funded original IIITs (like IIIT Allahabad) and PPP-model (Public-Private Partnership) IIITs established under the IIIT Act, 2014.
2
What is the difference between centrally-funded and PPP-model IIITs?
Centrally-funded IIITs like IIIT Allahabad were set up directly by the central government and have Institute of National Importance status from earlier legislation. PPP-model IIITs (the majority, such as IIIT Guwahati, IIIT Kota, IIIT Vadodara) are funded jointly by the central government, respective state government, and industry partners, and were granted Institute of National Importance status under the IIIT (PPP) Act, 2017.
3
Which is the top IIIT in India?
IIIT Hyderabad is widely regarded as the top IIIT in India, especially known for computer science and AI research — though it is not part of JoSAA and has its own separate admission process. Among the JoSAA-participating IIITs, IIIT Allahabad and IIIT Delhi-adjacent-tier institutes like IIIT Bangalore are highly regarded, and per JoSAA 2026 Round 5 data, IIIT Allahabad had the best closing rank (4,969) among JoSAA IIITs.
4
Do all IIITs offer the same branches?
No. While most IIITs focus heavily on Computer Science, Electronics & Communication, and Information Technology, exact branch offerings vary by institute. Some newer IIITs have a narrower set of programs compared to established ones like IIIT Allahabad or IIIT Gwalior.
5
Is IIIT Hyderabad part of JoSAA counselling?
No, IIIT Hyderabad is not part of JoSAA. It conducts its own separate admission process (partly via JEE Main rank and its own additional criteria/tests). This is a common point of confusion since many other IIITs (with similar names) are part of JoSAA.
