About IIT Roorkee
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee), established in 1847 as the Thomason College of Civil Engineering, is the oldest technical institution in Asia. Located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, it became an IIT in 2001.
IIT Roorkee has 22 academic departments and offers B.Tech, B.Arch, M.Tech, MBA, M.Sc, and PhD programmes. Its Civil Engineering department is one of the best in Asia, with strong research in earthquake engineering, hydrology, and geotechnical engineering.
The institute has approximately 1,100 B.Tech seats through JoSAA. It is ranked 6th in NIRF Engineering 2024 and has a strong research output with active collaboration with international universities.
IIT Roorkee's Mathematics & Computing programme has become increasingly popular, attracting candidates who prefer the quantitative and algorithmic approach to problem-solving alongside software skills.
