Which IIT & Branch Can You Get with Your JEE Advanced Rank? Guide to All 23 IITs

Use the Real Predictor Tool

This page is a guide explaining how IIT admission and prediction work. For an interactive, rank-based prediction across all 23 IITs, use our JEE Advanced College Predictor tool.

Every year, around 1.8 lakh JEE Main qualifiers appear for JEE Advanced, competing for roughly 17,700 seats across the 23 IITs. Your JEE Advanced All India Rank (AIR) — not your JEE Main rank — determines which IIT and branch you are eligible for through JoSAA counselling.

Unlike NIT admissions, IIT seats have no home-state quota — every seat is open to all-India competition, so a candidate from any state competes on the same closing-rank list for a given IIT and branch. This makes IIT admission purely a function of your AIR, category (General/OBC-NCL/SC/ST/EWS), and gender (there is a Female Supernumerary pool at IITs to improve gender diversity).

Branch choice matters as much as institute choice. A candidate with a rank of 3,000 might get Computer Science at a newer IIT like IIT Indore or IIT Hyderabad, or a core branch like Civil or Metallurgical Engineering at an older IIT like IIT Kharagpur or IIT Roorkee. Deciding between "better institute, weaker branch" versus "newer institute, popular branch" is one of the most common dilemmas during JoSAA choice filling.

Frequently Asked Questions – IIT College Predictor 2026

Common questions about predicting IIT admission via JEE Advanced

1
Is there a dedicated IIT college predictor tool on this page?
This page is a guide to how IIT admission through JEE Advanced and JoSAA works, along with real closing-rank benchmarks for all 23 IITs. For an interactive, rank-based prediction, use our JEE Advanced College Predictor tool, which uses JoSAA 2025 Round 5 closing rank data across category, gender, and Home State/Other State quotas to show which IIT-branch combinations are realistically within your reach.
2
What JEE Advanced rank do I need for the top IITs?
Based on JoSAA 2025 closing ranks (General category, CSE branch): IIT Bombay closed around rank 67, IIT Delhi around 90, IIT Madras around 140, IIT Kanpur around 500, IIT Kharagpur around 900, and IIT Roorkee around 1,200. Newer IITs like BHU, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Indore had CSE closing ranks in the 2,500–3,800 range. Non-CSE branches like Mechanical, Civil, and Chemical have significantly higher (more relaxed) closing ranks even at the older IITs.
3
How is IIT admission different from NIT admission?
IIT admission requires clearing JEE Advanced (which itself requires qualifying JEE Main first, typically within the top ~2.5 lakh candidates) and is allotted through JoSAA using All India Rank (AIR) with no home-state quota — every seat is open to all-India competition. NIT admission uses your JEE Main rank directly, and 50% of NIT seats are reserved for Home State candidates, which usually lowers the effective rank needed for your own state's NIT.
4
Do older IITs always have better closing ranks than newer IITs?
Generally yes, but with exceptions by branch. The seven older IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, and BHU) consistently have tighter closing ranks due to brand reputation and placement records. However, a popular branch like CSE at a newer IIT (e.g. IIT Hyderabad or IIT Indore) can still close tighter than a less popular branch like Metallurgical or Textile Engineering at an older IIT. Branch choice matters as much as institute choice.
5
Can I predict my IIT admission before JEE Advanced results are declared?
You can only get an accurate rank-based prediction once your JEE Advanced All India Rank is announced. Before that, this guide and our historical closing-rank tables help you understand realistic expectations and plan your JoSAA choice-filling strategy in advance, so you are ready to act quickly once results and counselling registration open.
6
What happens if my rank doesn't qualify for any IIT?
If your JEE Advanced rank is outside IIT closing ranks for all branches, you remain eligible for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA using your JEE Main rank (JEE Advanced qualifiers automatically have a valid JEE Main rank too). After the JoSAA rounds, CSAB counselling opens additional seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs for candidates who didn't get a JoSAA seat.
