What is AAT Registration?

A quick, plain-language explainer — who needs to register, why it exists, and where to go next

AAT Registration, In Plain Terms

AAT stands for Architecture Aptitude Test. “AAT registration” simply means signing up to appear for this test on the official JEE Advanced website, jeeadv.ac.in, after the JEE Advanced result is out. It is a separate, additional step — qualifying JEE Advanced does not automatically enter you into AAT. You have to actively register, and only for a short window of about one to two days after the result.

AAT registration matters only to one group of candidates: those who have qualified JEE Advanced and want to be considered for a B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture) seat at an IIT (historically, IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur have offered this program). If your interest is a B.Tech branch, you can ignore AAT entirely — it plays no role in B.Tech seat allotment through JoSAA.

Why This Extra Step Exists

JEE Advanced tests Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics — useful for gauging engineering aptitude, but not architecture aptitude. Architecture requires a different, more visual and spatial skill set: freehand sketching, geometric drawing, three-dimensional perception, and design sensitivity. AAT is a dedicated, pen-and-paper test built to assess exactly these skills, so it is kept as a separate opt-in registration rather than being bundled automatically into JEE Advanced qualification.

The Short Version

  • You must already have a valid JEE Advanced qualifying rank to even see the AAT registration option
  • Registration happens on jeeadv.ac.in using your existing JEE Advanced login — no separate portal
  • The window is short (historically 1–2 days after the result), so don't wait to check if you're even mildly interested in B.Arch
  • A modest additional fee applies, separate from the JEE Advanced fee
  • Only register if you genuinely intend to pursue architecture — it does not help or hurt your B.Tech options either way

Frequently Asked Questions – What is AAT Registration?

Quick answers about AAT registration

1
What does 'AAT registration' actually mean?
AAT registration is the act of signing up, on the official JEE Advanced portal (jeeadv.ac.in), to appear for the Architecture Aptitude Test — a separate, mandatory test for candidates who have qualified JEE Advanced and want to be considered for B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture) seats at IITs. It is not automatic; even a qualified JEE Advanced candidate must actively register for AAT within a short window after the result.
2
Who needs to register for AAT?
Only candidates who have already qualified JEE Advanced with a valid rank, and who are specifically interested in pursuing B.Arch (not B.Tech) at an IIT that offers the program, need to register for AAT. If you only want a B.Tech branch, you do not need to think about AAT registration at all — it has no bearing on B.Tech seat allotment.
3
Why does AAT registration exist as a separate step?
Architecture requires a different skill set than the Physics-Chemistry-Mathematics assessment in JEE Advanced — specifically, freehand drawing, spatial visualization, and aesthetic sensitivity. AAT registration exists to create a distinct, opt-in gate so that only candidates seriously considering architecture take this additional pen-and-paper test, which is scored and evaluated separately from JEE Advanced.
4
Is AAT registration the same as AAT eligibility?
No. Eligibility refers to whether you are allowed to register (you must have a valid JEE Advanced qualifying rank). Registration is the actual process of signing up and paying the fee once you know you're eligible. You can be eligible without registering — but if you don't register within the window, you lose the opportunity for that year regardless of your eligibility.
5
Where can I find the exact AAT registration dates and steps?
This page is a short explainer. For the exact step-by-step registration process, fee details, and document requirements, see our detailed AAT Registration guide. For a broader understanding of what AAT tests, which IITs offer B.Arch, and how it fits into the overall JoSAA counselling pipeline, see our AAT 2026 overview page.
