3 Types of IIITs – What You Need to Know

Type 1 – Autonomous (e.g., IIIT Hyderabad): Fully autonomous, not PPP. Best research and placement outcomes. IIIT-H is India's top CS research institution. Admission via JoSAA (JEE Advanced quota ~1200 for CSE) and UGEE (own exam).

Type 2 – Govt-Funded (e.g., IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Delhi): Funded by central government, participate fully in JoSAA, lower fees (~₹1.5-2.5 lakh/year), strong placement records. These are the most reliable IIITs after IIIT-H.

Type 3 – PPP Model (26 institutes in JoSAA): Jointly funded by Central Govt (50%), State Govt (35%), and Industry (15%). Quality varies significantly by industry partner. Placement outcomes range from ₹4–12 LPA. Accessible at higher JoSAA ranks (12,000–35,000 for CSE).

IIIT Hyderabad is unambiguously the best IIIT for a CS career in India. IIITs are specifically focused on computing and information technology — their entire curriculum is CS-oriented. What is the quality of PPP model IIITs?
PPP (Public-Private Partnership) IIITs are a mixed bag. They carry the government IIIT credential and participate in JoSAA, but their quality varies significantly based on the industry partner's involvement and the college's management. PPP IIITs like IIIT Kancheepuram, IIIT Sri City, IIIT Vadodara, and IIIT Nagpur are among the least competitive IIITs in JoSAA (closing ranks 12,000-25,000+ for CSE) and have lower average placements (₹4-10 LPA). They are reasonable options if you want an IIIT credential at an accessible rank, but mid-tier NITs may offer better placement outcomes in many cases.

How many IIITs participate in JoSAA 2026?
26 IIITs participate in JoSAA 2026 counselling. This includes government-funded IIITs, PPP model IIITs, and some autonomous IIITs (like IIIT Hyderabad through JEE Advanced quota).
