IIIT Hyderabad Overview 2026

IIIT Hyderabad (International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad) was established in 1998 as an autonomous research university with a focus on computing and information sciences. Unlike the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) IIITs, IIIT-H is a completely autonomous institution, giving it full freedom in curriculum design, faculty hiring, and research direction. It is located in Gachibowli, Hyderabad — the heart of the city's tech district.

Research Excellence

IIIT-H is India's top CS research institution by research output per faculty. Key research labs include the Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC), Centre for Visual Information Technology (CVIT), Machine Learning Lab, and Robotics Research Center. Faculty members hold PhDs from MIT, Stanford, CMU, and University of Southern California. Many BTech students publish papers at top international conferences like NeurIPS, CVPR, and ACL.

Fee Structure

Annual fee: approximately ₹3.5–4.5 lakh per year. This is higher than IIT fees (~₹2 lakh/year) but reflects IIIT-H's autonomous status. Total 4-year cost is approximately ₹14–18 lakh. Need-based scholarships and merit-cum-means scholarships are available. The higher fee is offset by IIIT-H's strong placement outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions – IIIT Hyderabad 2026

1
Is IIIT Hyderabad better than IIT for CS?
IIIT Hyderabad (IIIT-H) is widely considered India's premier CS research institution. For research-oriented careers (MS/PhD, AI/ML research, academic positions), IIIT-H arguably rivals or surpasses many old IITs. Its faculty includes PhDs from MIT, Stanford, and CMU, and the research output per faculty member is exceptional. However, for overall placements across all branches, general brand recognition, and non-CS career paths, the IIT brand (especially old IITs) remains stronger. For someone specifically passionate about CS research, IIIT-H is in the top tier globally.
2
What is the difference between UGEE and JoSAA admission at IIIT Hyderabad?
IIIT Hyderabad has two admission routes: (1) JoSAA: Through JEE Advanced rank — approximately 1200 closing rank for CSE in General category. Seats are limited through JoSAA. (2) UGEE (Undergraduate Entrance Exam): IIIT-H's own entrance exam, separate from JEE. UGEE has multiple tracks — IIIT-H Olympiad-based, Interview-based, and Rank-based. Students who clear UGEE directly are often considered for research-track programmes. Many students who are passionate about IIIT-H specifically prepare for UGEE as an alternative route even if their JEE rank isn't in the top 1200.
3
What are the fees at IIIT Hyderabad?
IIIT Hyderabad is an autonomous private institution (not a PPP institute) and charges higher fees than NITs or IITs. The annual fee for B.Tech/Dual Degree programmes is approximately ₹3.5–4.5 lakh per year, totalling ₹14–18 lakh for 4 years. This is significantly higher than IIT fees (~₹2 lakh/year) but lower than most private engineering colleges. Scholarships and financial aid are available for meritorious students.
4
What are placements like at IIIT Hyderabad?
IIIT Hyderabad CSE placements are strong, with an average package of ₹18–28 LPA and top packages of ₹60–80 LPA from companies like Google, Microsoft, and Uber. IIIT-H is specifically well-known for research-track placements — Microsoft Research India, Google Research, and ISRO regularly recruit here. The placement statistics are bolstered by the institution's strong alumni network in Hyderabad's thriving tech ecosystem.
5
What research opportunities does IIIT Hyderabad offer?
IIIT Hyderabad is India's top CS research institution. Research labs include the Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC), Centre for Visual Information Technology (CVIT), Machine Learning Lab, and Robotics Research Center. Faculty members are internationally published researchers who have worked at or collaborated with MIT, Stanford, CMU, and Google Research. PhD students and even BTech students get world-class research mentorship. Many IIIT-H graduates publish research papers at top international conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, ACL) during their undergraduate years.
