About NIT Rourkela
National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, established in 1961, is one of India's oldest and most well-regarded NITs. Located in Rourkela, Odisha — home to the famous Rourkela Steel Plant (SAIL) — the institute has always had deep ties with India's steel, mining, and heavy industries.
Ranked #21 in NIRF 2025, NIT Rourkela is particularly well-known for its Mining Engineering, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Ceramic Engineering, and Civil Engineering programs. It is one of the few institutes in India with a dedicated Department of Mining Engineering and Ceramic Engineering.
