There are 31 NITs spread across India, all of which participate in JoSAA counselling for admission through JEE Main rank, but their NIRF standing varies considerably — from the top-tier group (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal, Calicut, Rourkela) that regularly places within the top 25 of the Engineering category, down to newer NITs established around 2009-2010 (such as those in Sikkim, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Andhra Pradesh) that are still developing research output and faculty depth, and typically rank lower.

Beyond the well-known top group, several mid-tier NITs — including MNNIT Allahabad, MNIT Jaipur, NIT Kurukshetra, MANIT Bhopal, NIT Durgapur, and SVNIT Surat — sit in a competitive middle band where NIRF ranks can shift by a few positions year to year as institutes ramp up research output and improve placement statistics. These are all solid options for students whose JEE Main rank doesn't reach the very top NITs, and many have specific departments (such as MNIT Jaipur's electronics programs or MANIT Bhopal's civil engineering) with strong regional industry reputations even if the institute's overall NIRF position isn't in the top 15.

For a JEE Main aspirant, this NIRF spread is a useful secondary filter once you already know which NITs are within reach based on your expected rank. Two NITs with closing ranks that are numerically close in JoSAA data can still differ meaningfully in NIRF standing, research opportunities, and placement consistency — so when a choice-filling decision comes down to two similarly-ranked options, checking their relative NIRF trend over the past few years (rather than a single year's snapshot) can help you pick the institute that's more likely to keep improving its academic and placement ecosystem during your four years there.

It's also useful to know that a handful of NITs consistently punch above their overall NIRF rank in specific branches — for instance, an NIT that ranks lower overall might still have a particularly strong Computer Science or Electronics department due to specific faculty expertise or industry partnerships. NIRF's institute-level composite score doesn't capture this branch-level nuance, so combine it with branch-specific placement and faculty information before finalizing your JoSAA choice order.

Remember too that NIT admission itself has nothing to do with NIRF rank — seats are allotted purely through JEE Main percentile/rank via JoSAA's home-state and other-state quota system, meaning your actual chance of getting into a specific NIT depends on your category, home state, and the branch you're targeting, not on that NIT's NIRF position. A student from an NIT's home state generally has a meaningfully better shot at that NIT (due to the 50% home-state quota) than an out-of-state candidate with the same rank, which is a far more decisive factor in admission planning than NIRF standing.

Because the home-state quota effect is so significant, it's common to see students strategically prioritize their home-state NIT even when it has a somewhat lower NIRF rank than an out-of-state alternative, simply because the realistic admission probability is much higher. When comparing NITs during choice-filling, weigh NIRF rank alongside your JEE Main rank, home-state status, and branch preference together rather than treating NIRF position as a standalone deciding factor.
