NIRF Ranking 2025 – Top Engineering Colleges in India

IIT Madras #1 for 7th year | Complete top-30 list | NIRF methodology explained

Rankings shown are based on NIRF 2025 Engineering category. Ranks may vary slightly from Overall category rankings. Some positions are approximate. Check official nirfindia.org for exact data.

Understanding the NIRF Engineering Category

The NIRF Engineering category is a subject-specific ranking distinct from the NIRF Overall category, which also includes universities and colleges that are not primarily engineering institutions. Because the Engineering list is a narrower, more focused comparison, it's generally the more useful reference for a JEE aspirant trying to compare purely technical institutes against each other, since it strips out the effect of large multi-disciplinary universities that may rank highly overall due to medical, law, or management programs but aren't directly comparable on the engineering front.

IIT Madras has held the top position in this category for several consecutive years, largely on the strength of its research output, patent filings, and industry-sponsored projects, alongside consistently strong placement outcomes. The next tier — IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Roorkee — has remained fairly stable at the top as well, reflecting the fact that these institutes have had a multi-decade head start in research infrastructure and faculty recruitment compared to newer IITs and most NITs.

NITs typically populate positions from roughly the high single digits through the twenties and thirties, with NIT Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), NIT Surathkal, NIT Rourkela, and NIT Warangal usually leading the NIT pack. IIITs, being smaller and more specialized in computer science and IT-adjacent fields, tend to rank lower on the overall Engineering list despite very strong placement outcomes in their core specialization — this is because NIRF's methodology also weighs research breadth and infrastructure scale, areas where focused, smaller institutes can score lower even if student outcomes are excellent.

State universities and technical institutes such as Jadavpur University and Anna University also make regular appearances in the top 30, which is a useful reminder to students that strong engineering education in India isn't limited to the centrally-funded IIT/NIT/IIIT ecosystem. These institutes often have decades of research history and strong regional recognition, even if they operate under a different admission process (typically state-level entrance exams) rather than JEE Main or JEE Advanced.

NIRF Score vs JEE/JoSAA Closing Rank — Not the Same Thing

A common mistake among JEE aspirants is assuming NIRF rank and JoSAA/counselling closing rank move together — they often don't. NIRF rank reflects institutional quality across research, teaching resources, and outcomes, while a college's admission closing rank is a function of demand, seat count, branch popularity, and applicant pool size in that year's counselling. It's entirely possible for a NIRF-lower-ranked NIT branch (say, a popular CSE seat) to have a tougher, lower closing rank than a NIRF-higher-ranked IIT's less popular branch.

Because of this, students are better served using NIRF as a quality and reputation signal for shortlisting and tie-breaking between similarly-ranked options, while relying on actual historical closing rank data and a rank predictor tool to gauge admission feasibility. Treating NIRF rank as a direct proxy for "how hard is it to get in" can lead to miscalibrated choice-filling strategy during JoSAA or CSAB rounds.

Frequently Asked Questions – NIRF Ranking 2025 Engineering

Common questions about NIRF 2025 engineering rankings and methodology

1
Which engineering college is ranked #1 in NIRF 2025?
IIT Madras is ranked #1 in the Engineering category of NIRF 2025 — for the 7th consecutive year. IIT Madras scores highest in research output, patents, and graduation outcomes. It is followed by IIT Delhi (#2), IIT Bombay (#3), IIT Kanpur (#4), and IIT Roorkee (#5) in the Engineering category.
2
How is NIRF ranking calculated?
NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) ranks institutions on five parameters: (1) Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR) — 30 marks, (2) Research and Professional Practice (RP) — 30 marks, (3) Graduation Outcomes (GO) — 20 marks, (4) Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) — 10 marks, (5) Peer Perception (PR) — 10 marks. Total = 100 marks. IIT Madras excels in research output and patents, which is why it consistently ranks #1.
3
How does NIRF differ from QS World University Rankings?
NIRF is an India-specific ranking system by the Ministry of Education focusing on teaching, research, and inclusivity. QS World Rankings are international and weigh heavily on global academic reputation (40%), employer reputation (10%), and faculty-student ratio (20%). IITs rank better in QS (IIT Bombay ~118 globally in QS 2025) than in NIRF (IIT Bombay #3 in India). IIT Madras's NIRF #1 is primarily research-driven; QS would rank IIT Bombay slightly differently due to international reputation weights.
4
Can NIRF rank change year to year?
Yes, NIRF ranks can change year to year as institutions submit new data. Factors like research publications, patents, placement outcomes, and student diversity can shift rankings. However, top IITs have maintained consistent positions — IIT Madras has been #1 for 7 consecutive years. Newer institutions like IIT Hyderabad have been climbing steadily. Private institutions like BITS Pilani typically rank in the 25-30 range.
5
Are private colleges included in NIRF Engineering ranking?
Yes, NIRF Engineering rankings include both government and private institutions. Notable private colleges in the top 30 include BITS Pilani (typically #26-29), VIT Vellore (typically #12-16 in Overall rankings), Thapar Institute, and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. However, the top 20-25 spots are dominated by IITs and NITs due to their stronger research output and resources.
