New IITs vs Old IITs – Comparison Table
| Parameter | Old IITs | New IITs |
|---|---|---|
| Established | 1950s–60s (Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras) | Mostly 2008–2016 (Hyderabad, Indore, Mandi, Bhilai, Goa, Jammu, etc.) |
| IIT CSE Closing Rank Range (Round 5, 2026) | Approx. 67–3,000 (old IITs typically at the top) | Approx. 3,000–8,886 (newer IITs fill lower ranks) |
| Alumni Network | Extensive, decades-deep, strong in industry & academia globally | Growing, smaller batch sizes graduated so far |
| Infrastructure | Large, established campuses; some facilities aging | Modern, purpose-built campuses (in many cases) |
| Avg Package (CSE, illustrative) | ₹30–50 LPA at top old IITs | ₹15–30 LPA, improving each year |
| Research Output | Highest — decades of established labs & funding | Growing rapidly, IIT Hyderabad notably strong |
| Brand Recognition | Best — globally recognised, recruiter trust highest | Building — recognised nationally, growing internationally |
| Faculty Strength | Large, experienced faculty pools | Smaller but often young, research-active faculty |
Note: IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati are technically later additions but are widely considered "established" IITs alongside the classic 5, due to their long track record (Roorkee traces back to 1847 as a college; Guwahati est. 1994).
Which Should You Choose?
Rank allows an old IIT (any branch): Choose the old IIT. Decades of alumni network, industry trust, and research infrastructure outweigh the modern-campus advantage of new IITs in almost all cases.
Rank allows new IIT CSE vs old IIT core branch: This is genuinely close. New IIT CSE (e.g., IIT Hyderabad, Indore) often has better placement outcomes than an old IIT's less popular core branch (like Metallurgy or Mining at Kharagpur). Compare specific branch placement data.
Prioritizing modern infrastructure and smaller batch sizes: Newer IITs (Hyderabad, Indore, Mandi) offer newer buildings, smaller class sizes, and more individual faculty attention — a real advantage for some students.
Rank only allows the newest IITs (Bhilai, Goa, Jammu, Dharwad): Compare carefully against top NITs — a well-established NIT branch may offer more consistent outcomes than the very newest IITs which are still building their placement track record.
Bottom line: Old IITs remain the safer bet for brand and network; newer IITs are a solid, improving choice — especially IIT Hyderabad, Indore, and Mandi, which have already built strong reputations.
