IIT Roorkee (formerly known as the University of Roorkee and before that the Thomason College of Civil Engineering) was established in 1847, making it the oldest technical institution in Asia. Located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, it gained IIT status in 2001. The institute holds an NIRF 2025 ranking of #9 in engineering and is globally recognised for its contributions to civil, structural, and now computer science engineering.

The campus spans approximately 365 acres and hosts more than 10,000 students across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. The institute has produced notable alumni including industry leaders, IAS officers, and global researchers.

B.Arch at IIT Roorkee

The B.Arch programme at IIT Roorkee is one of the best architecture programmes in India. Admission requires qualifying JEE Advanced Paper 2A (Architecture Aptitude Test). The programme has roots going back to the institute's founding in 1847 as a civil engineering school. Graduates work with top architecture and design firms in India and globally.

Fee Structure

The annual tuition fee at IIT Roorkee is approximately ₹2.1 lakh per year for B.Tech programmes. This is similar to other older IITs. Hostel and mess charges add approximately ₹1–1.2 lakh per year. Financial aid is available for economically weaker sections.

Placements 2025

IIT Roorkee's placement record is strong. CSE students receive average packages of ₹18–25 LPA with top offers touching ₹1–1.5 Cr (international). The overall institute average across all branches is approximately ₹12–18 LPA. Top recruiters include Microsoft, Amazon, Oracle, Qualcomm, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Vedanta, and ONGC.
