IIT Kharagpur Overview 2026

IIT Kharagpur was established in 1951 as the first Indian Institute of Technology, on the historic site of Hijli Detention Camp in West Bengal. With a sprawling 2,100-acre campus, it is the largest IIT in India and one of the most comprehensive technical universities in Asia. The institute hosts 19 academic departments and several multi-disciplinary research centres.

NIRF 2025 ranks IIT Kharagpur at #6 in engineering. The institute has over 22,000 alumni globally who hold positions in academia, industry, government, and entrepreneurship.

Unique Programmes

IIT Kharagpur offers Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering — one of only two such programmes in India. This is ideal for candidates interested in shipbuilding, offshore platforms, and naval defence. The Mining Engineering programme is excellent for PSU placements at Coal India, ONGC, NMDC, and SAIL. The Agricultural & Food Engineering programme is another unique offering for those interested in agri-tech.

Fee Structure

Annual tuition fee at IIT Kharagpur is approximately ₹1.8 lakh per year. Hostel and mess charges add approximately ₹1–1.2 lakh per year. Financial aid is available for EWS and SC/ST students.
