JoSAA Eligibility

Can a JEE Main-only Candidate Participate in JoSAA?

Yes — JEE Main qualifiers participate in JoSAA for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Here is everything you need to know.

The Short Answer: Yes, With Conditions

A JEE Main-only candidate — someone who appeared in JEE Main 2026 but did not appear in (or qualify) JEE Advanced 2026 — can absolutely participate in JoSAA counselling. JoSAA is not an IIT-exclusive process. The majority of institutes under JoSAA — 31 NITs, 26 IIITs, and 33 GFTIs — accept admissions based on JEE Main rank alone.

The only institutes accessible exclusively via JEE Advanced rank are the 23 IITs. If you have only a JEE Main rank, those IIT seats simply will not show up in your choice-filling interface. Everything else — NITs, IIITs, GFTIs — will be available for you to add to your choice list.

Quick Summary

  • JEE Main rank only → NITs + IIITs + GFTIs via JoSAA
  • JEE Advanced rank → IITs + NITs + IIITs + GFTIs via JoSAA
  • • Both ranks together → Full choice of all 113+ institutes in JoSAA

How to Register on JoSAA with Only a JEE Main Rank

Registration for JEE Main-only candidates follows the exact same process as for JEE Advanced qualifiers. Here are the steps:

  1. 1

    Wait for JEE Advanced Result

JoSAA registration opens 1–2 days after the JEE Advanced result is declared (typically late May or early June). Even if you did not appear in JEE Advanced, this is when JoSAA registration opens for everyone.

  2. 2

    Visit josaa.nic.in

Go to the official JoSAA portal. Click on 'Candidate Registration' and use your JEE Main 2026 application number and password (the same credentials used on jeemain.nta.ac.in).

  3. 3

    Complete Profile Setup

Fill in your personal details, verify your mobile and email OTP, upload required documents (10th certificate, 12th marksheet, category certificate if applicable, and a recent passport photo).

  4. 4

    Fill Choices

The choice-filling interface will automatically show you NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. IIT options will not appear. Add as many choices as possible (aim for 80–100+) and order them from most-preferred to least-preferred.

  5. 5

    Lock Choices

After reviewing the mock allotment, lock your choice list before the deadline. Once locked, your order is final for all 5 rounds.

Common Confusion: IIIT ≠ IIT

One of the most persistent misconceptions among JEE aspirants is confusing IIITs with IITs. These are completely different institutions:

IIIT (Indian Institute of Information Technology)

  • • 26 IIITs under JoSAA
  • • JEE Main rank is sufficient
  • • Focus areas: IT, CSE, ECE
  • • Good placements in IT sector
  • • Examples: IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Gwalior

IIT (Indian Institute of Technology)

  • • 23 IITs under JoSAA
  • • JEE Advanced rank required
  • • Broad engineering programs
  • • Top global university rankings
  • • Examples: IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi

Note: IIIT Hyderabad (the one known for its excellent research reputation) is autonomous and does NOT participate in JoSAA. It conducts its own test (UGEE). The IIIT Hyderabad listed in JoSAA is a different institution under the IIIT-H category but managed separately.

1
Can I fill choices for NITs in JoSAA with only a JEE Main rank?
Yes, absolutely. JEE Main rank is sufficient to participate in JoSAA for all NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. You do not need to have appeared in or qualified JEE Advanced. Your JEE Main rank (and the corresponding category rank) is used directly for seat allocation in these institutes through the JoSAA portal.
2
Can a JEE Main-only candidate apply to IITs through JoSAA?
No. IIT seats in JoSAA are accessible only to JEE Advanced qualifiers. If you have only a JEE Main rank and have not appeared in JEE Advanced, IIT options will simply not appear in your choice-filling interface on josaa.nic.in. You will still see all NIT, IIIT, and GFTI options.
3
If I qualified both JEE Main and JEE Advanced, how does JoSAA treat me?
JoSAA links both your JEE Main and JEE Advanced ranks to your account. You can fill choices for IITs (using your JEE Advanced rank) as well as NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs (using your JEE Main rank). The algorithm automatically applies the correct rank for each type of institution. There is no need to apply separately.
4
How do I register on JoSAA with only a JEE Main rank?
Go to josaa.nic.in once registration opens (typically within 2–3 days of JEE Advanced results). Use your JEE Main application number and password to log in. During registration, the system will detect that you have only a JEE Main rank and restrict your choice-filling to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs automatically. Complete profile setup, upload documents, and proceed to choice filling.
5
Are IIITs the same as IITs? A lot of people confuse them.
No, IIITs (Indian Institutes of Information Technology) and IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) are entirely different institutions. IITs are older, more prestigious, and require JEE Advanced. IIITs are accessible via JEE Main rank through JoSAA. There are 26 IIITs in the JoSAA system, including IIIT Hyderabad (autonomous, separate admission), IIIT Allahabad, IIIT Gwalior, IIIT Jabalpur, and many others. Do not confuse IIIT Hyderabad (which has its own exam UGEE) with the IIIT Hyderabad listed in JoSAA.
