NIT Other State Quota Explained (2026)

Understanding the 50% Home State / 50% Other State seat split at NITs and how it affects your admission chances

What is NIT Other State Quota?

Every National Institute of Technology (NIT) splits its total seats into two equal halves: Home State (HS) quota — 50% reserved for candidates domiciled in the state where the NIT is located, and Other State (OS) quota — 50% open to candidates from any other state in India (including candidates from the same state who choose to compete in the national pool, where applicable).

This policy exists because NITs are centrally funded institutes of national importance, meant to provide equitable access to students across India while also ensuring state-level representation. The split was formalized after NITs were brought under central funding in 2002–2003.

Both HS and OS seats are allotted through the same JoSAA counselling process using your JEE Main All-India Rank (CRL), but each category — HS and OS — within each branch has its own separate opening and closing rank.

How HS vs OS Quota Affects Cutoffs

Since OS seats are open to the entire country's applicant pool, competition is typically more intense, especially for popular NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal) and popular branches (CSE, ECE). HS seats, by contrast, are filled by a smaller pool — candidates domiciled in that one state — so cutoffs can be more relaxed, particularly for NITs in states with a smaller number of JEE aspirants.

For example, NITs in smaller states (Sikkim, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh) often see very relaxed HS cutoffs because the local candidate pool is small, while the OS cutoff for the same branch can be far tighter.

Frequently Asked Questions – NIT Other State Quota

Common questions about Home State and Other State quota at NITs

1
What is the Other State (OS) quota at NITs?
Every NIT reserves 50% of its total seats for candidates who are NOT domiciled in the state where the NIT is located — this is the Other State (OS) quota. The remaining 50% is reserved for domicile candidates of that state under the Home State (HS) quota. Both quotas use the same JEE Main rank (CRL) but maintain separate opening/closing ranks.
2
Is OS quota cutoff always higher than HS quota cutoff?
Generally yes, for NITs located in states with a smaller number of JEE Main candidates from that state — OS quota cutoffs are often tighter (better rank required) because far more candidates compete for the fixed 50% OS seats nationally. For NITs in populous states like UP or Maharashtra, the HS quota pool is larger and HS cutoffs can sometimes be comparable to OS cutoffs.
3
How is my home state determined for HS quota?
Your home state is determined by where you passed Class 12 (or equivalent), not your permanent address or birthplace, as per JoSAA rules. If you studied in a state different from your domicile state, your HS quota NIT is typically based on the state of your qualifying examination, subject to JoSAA's detailed eligibility criteria — always confirm the exact rule for the current year from the official JoSAA brochure.
4
Does OS quota apply to all 31 NITs?
Yes, all NITs follow the same 50% HS / 50% OS structure as per the common JoSAA counselling policy. This is uniform across NIT Trichy, NIT Warangal, NIT Surathkal, NIT Kurukshetra, and every other NIT.
5
Can a Home State candidate apply under OS quota instead?
No. Candidates are automatically evaluated under both HS (for their home state NITs) and OS (for all other NITs) categories during JoSAA counselling — there's no manual choice of quota. Your home state NIT seats are evaluated under HS; every other NIT's seats are evaluated under OS for you automatically.
