Frequently Asked Questions – IIT Scholarships 2026

Common questions about IIT scholarships, eligibility and application process

1
What is the eligibility for MCM scholarship at IIT?
The Merit-cum-Means (MCM) scholarship at IIT is available to students whose annual family income is less than ₹5 Lakh. Under MCM: students with family income up to ₹1 Lakh get full fee waiver + monthly stipend of ₹1,000; students with income ₹1-2 Lakh get 2/3 fee waiver + stipend; students with income ₹2-5 Lakh may get partial waiver. Up to 25% of students in each IIT are eligible. Academic performance (CGPA) must also be maintained.
2
Can I get a full scholarship at IIT?
Yes, a near-full scholarship is possible at IIT through a combination of schemes. The MCM scholarship covers full tuition for family income < ₹1 LPA, SC/ST scholarship covers tuition for SC/ST students, and state scholarships can cover hostel/mess for eligible students. Additionally, the Institute Merit Scholarship covers tuition for top 7% of the class. With the right combination, an SC/ST student from a low-income family may pay almost nothing for IIT.
3
What is the income limit for scholarship at IIT?
The income limits for IIT scholarships: MCM scholarship — family income up to ₹5 Lakh/year (₹1 Lakh for maximum benefit). Institute Merit Scholarship — no income limit (purely merit-based, top 7% of class). SC/ST government scholarship — no income limit for tuition waiver. Corporate scholarships (Tata, Infosys) — income criteria varies, typically ₹3-8 Lakh per year. Prime Minister Scholarship — for children of ex-servicemen, specific criteria apply.
4

5

(2) OBC Post-Matric Scholarship (Non-Creamy Layer) — funded by state governments, covers tuition and may cover hostel. Apply through state education department or NSP portal. (3) Central Sector Scholarship — merit-based (top 20th percentile in board exams), available to all categories including OBC. However, no automatic fee waiver exists for OBC (unlike SC/ST).
