Engineering Branch Salary Rankings – Fresh Graduates 2026

Salary ranges below are for campus placements at IITs and NITs. Private college figures are typically 50–70% lower than NIT figures shown. "IIT" here refers to the older IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati). Newer IITs fall between IIT and NIT ranges.

IIT vs NIT vs Private College – The Salary Gap Explained

The salary difference between IITs, NITs, and private colleges is real and significant at the entry level — but it narrows considerably with experience.

At Entry Level (0–1 year)

The gap is largest here. IIT CSE medians (₹20–50 LPA) are 2–3x higher than NIT CSE medians (₹8–18 LPA) and 5–8x higher than private college medians (₹3–6 LPA). This is driven by the quality of companies that visit campus: top product companies and FAANG firms recruit exclusively or predominantly from IITs and a handful of top NITs.

At 3–5 Years Experience

The IIT premium narrows. Skills, portfolio, and job-hopping strategy become more important. An NIT graduate who joined a mid-tier product company and performed well can reach ₹20–30 LPA — overlapping with many IIT graduates stuck at service companies. A private college graduate with strong skills and certifications can also close a significant part of the gap.

At 8–10 Years Experience

For most professionals, the college brand matters less than technical leadership, domain expertise, and professional network. Salary distributions from IIT and NIT graduates overlap substantially. IIT alumni networks still provide some advantage in senior hiring and entrepreneurship, but individual performance is the dominant factor.

Highest Paying Engineering Branches – FAQs

1
Which engineering branch has the highest salary in India in 2026?
Computer Science Engineering (CSE) consistently offers the highest starting salaries in India. IIT CSE graduates receive median packages of ₹25–50 LPA, with top offers reaching ₹80–150 LPA from foreign companies. Even at NITs, CSE graduates start at ₹8–18 LPA. Data Science and AI is a close second, especially from top-tier institutes, with starting salaries of ₹15–30 LPA at IITs and ₹10–18 LPA at NITs.
2
Does the IIT vs NIT salary gap reduce with experience?
Yes, significantly. The IIT premium is most pronounced at the entry level, where IIT CSE graduates can earn 2–3x more than NIT CSE graduates and 5–8x more than private college graduates. By year 5, the gap narrows considerably — a skilled NIT graduate at a product company can match or exceed an IIT graduate at a service firm. By year 10, performance and skillset matter far more than the college name for most professionals.
3
Is branch more important than college, or is it the other way around?
For salary, both matter but in different ways. College tier determines which companies recruit on campus. Branch determines the roles you are eligible for. Broadly, a top college with a lower-paying branch (e.g., IIT Civil) often beats a mid-tier college with CSE for campus placements because the IIT name attracts better employers. However, a private college CSE student who self-places via strong skills can also reach competitive salaries, making branch an enabler rather than a guarantee.
4
Do mechanical or civil engineers get IT jobs, and does branch matter for switching?
Yes, many mechanical, civil, and other non-CS engineers switch to IT roles, especially at service companies like TCS, Wipro, and Infosys that hire from all branches. For product companies (Google, Microsoft, Flipkart), the preference is strongly for CSE or ECE candidates, though skilled non-CS engineers with strong programming portfolios do get in. The switch is easier from ECE than from mechanical or civil because ECE coursework overlaps significantly with software engineering.
5
What is the salary growth trajectory for engineering graduates over 5 years?
Growth varies sharply by company type. At IT service companies (TCS, Wipro, Infosys), growth is slow — from ₹3–5 LPA to ₹6–10 LPA over 5 years. At product companies (Flipkart, Swiggy, Zomato), growth is faster — ₹12–20 LPA can become ₹25–40 LPA with promotions and job changes. At FAANG-level companies (Google, Microsoft), entry-level roles of ₹25–50 LPA can reach ₹60–120 LPA by year 5. Core engineering (mechanical, civil, electrical) typically grows from ₹4–6 LPA to ₹8–15 LPA over 5 years at established firms, with PSU engineers reaching ₹12–20 LPA including allowances.
