What Is a Good Score in JEE Advanced?

"Good" isn't a fixed number — it depends on which IIT and branch you're targeting. Here's a rank-based benchmark using real JoSAA 2026 closing rank data.

Ranks Shift Every Year

The figures below are from JoSAA 2026 Round 5 (final round) closing ranks — a useful reference, but not a guarantee for future years. Closing ranks depend on the number of candidates, seat matrix, and category-wise reservation each year. Always cross-check with the latest JoSAA data before making decisions.

JEE Advanced Is About Rank, Not Marks

Unlike board exams, JEE Advanced doesn't allot seats based on raw marks or percentage. Your Common Rank List (CRL) rank — and your category rank if applicable — is what determines eligibility for a seat through JoSAA counselling. So the real question isn't "what marks are good?" but "what rank gives me access to the IIT/branch I want?"

Rough Rank-to-Outcome Guide

Under ~500

Top branches (CSE/EE) at IIT Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur possible.

~500 – 3,300

CSE at an average/newer IIT is realistic; core branches at top IITs very much in range.

~3,300 – 8,400

Non-CSE branches at most IITs; CSE at the least-demanded IITs (near the 2026 CSE cutoff of ~8,886) becomes a stretch but possible.

~8,400 – 28,500

Core/other branches at newer or less-preferred-location IITs remain in reach depending on category.

Above ~28,500

An IIT seat via the 2026 general-category closing trend becomes unlikely — NIT/IIIT/GFTI options via JoSAA become the stronger path.

* Approximate, general-category, 2026 Round 5 reference. Category-reserved ranks (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS) follow separate, generally more relaxed cutoffs. Use a rank predictor tool for a personalised estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about good JEE Advanced scores and ranks

1
What JEE Advanced rank is considered 'good' for an IIT seat?
Based on JoSAA 2026 Round 5 (final round) data, the overall IIT closing ranks ranged from as low as 67 (IIT Bombay, top branch) to about 28,480 (the widest closing rank across all IITs, all branches, all categories). The average closing rank across all IIT seats filled was around 8,369. So a rank under roughly 8,000–8,500 gave a realistic shot at an average IIT branch, while any rank under 28,000 still had a chance at some IIT seat in some branch/category combination.
2
What rank do I need for CSE at an IIT?
IIT Computer Science branches are far more competitive than the overall IIT average. In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, IIT CSE closing ranks ranged from 67 (best, IIT Bombay) to about 8,886 (worst, IIT Bhilai), with an average closing rank of roughly 3,266. So a rank under approximately 3,000–3,500 gave a good chance at CSE in an average IIT, while ranks up to about 8,800 could still land CSE at a newer/lower-demand IIT.
3
Is a rank of 10,000 good in JEE Advanced?
A rank of 10,000 is above the overall IIT average closing rank (~8,369 in 2026 Round 5) but still within range for many IIT seats in non-CSE branches such as core engineering disciplines, especially at newer or geographically less-preferred IITs. It would not be competitive for CSE at any IIT, where the worst 2026 closing rank was under 9,000.
4
Does 'good score' mean the same as 'good rank' in JEE Advanced?
Not exactly — JEE Advanced allots IIT seats purely by rank (Common Rank List and category ranks), not by raw marks or percentage. Marks matter only insofar as they determine your rank. So when evaluating your chances, always think in terms of rank compared to previous years' closing ranks, not marks or percentage alone.
5
Will JEE Advanced 2027 closing ranks be the same as 2026?
No. Closing ranks shift every year based on the number of candidates, seat matrix changes, and difficulty level of that year's paper. The 2026 figures on this page are a reference benchmark, not a guarantee — always check the most recent official JoSAA data closer to your admission cycle.
