In JoSAA counselling, the opening rank is the highest rank (best rank) that received an allotment for a specific college-program combination in a given round, while the closing rank is the lowest rank (worst rank) that was allotted a seat. A student with a rank between the opening and closing rank was eligible for that seat. Closing rank is the most important number to compare when checking your chances.

AI (All India) quota seats are open to students from any state. OS (Other State) quota seats at NITs are for students who are not home-state residents. HS (Home State) quota seats at NITs are reserved for students domiciled in the state where the NIT is located. IITs use only the AI quota. NITs and IIITs have both OS and HS quotas. Closing ranks for HS quota are usually higher (easier to get) than OS quota for the same college and branch.

Among all IITs, IIT Bombay (Computer Science) consistently has the lowest closing rank (most competitive), often under rank 100 for the OPEN category. IIT Delhi CSE typically closes around rank 100–120. IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Kanpur CSE close under rank 300. Closing ranks change each round because candidates who received allotments in earlier rounds either accept and withdraw from further rounds or reject and re-enter. As high-demand seats get filled in rounds 1–3, remaining seats in later rounds are contested by fewer eligible candidates, so closing ranks may increase (become easier) for less popular programs while popular programs remain stable. Comparing Round 6 closing ranks gives the most realistic picture of actual competition.
