Smaller NITs (NIT Manipur, NIT Nagaland, NIT Arunachal Pradesh, NIT Mizoram, NIT Sikkim, NIT Meghalaya, NIT Puducherry) each have around 200–400 seats. These NITs are newer (established post-2009) but offer the same NIT degree and are improving in infrastructure and placements every year. Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about NIT seats in India

1
How many total seats are there in all NITs combined?
There are approximately 23,000–24,500 total B.Tech seats across all 31 NITs in India as of 2026. This number includes seats across all branches and categories (General, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS). The exact number varies slightly each year as NITs occasionally add new programs.
2
Which NIT has the most seats?
NIT Allahabad (Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology) has among the highest seat counts with approximately 1,800+ seats across all branches. NIT Calicut, NIT Rourkela, and NIT Trichy also have over 1,500 seats each. Newer NITs like NIT Manipur or NIT Nagaland have fewer than 300 seats.
3
What is the reservation breakdown for NIT seats?
NIT seats follow the standard central government reservation policy: General/Unreserved – 40.5%, OBC-NCL – 27%, SC – 15%, ST – 7.5%, EWS – 10%. Additionally, 5% supernumerary seats are reserved for PwD (Persons with Disability) candidates across all categories.
4
What is the Home State quota in NITs?
50% of seats in each NIT are reserved for candidates from the Home State (the state where the NIT is located). The remaining 50% are Other State (OS) quota seats open to students from all states. Home State candidates generally face a higher rank cutoff number (more lenient cutoff) compared to Other State seats.
5
How are NIT seats allotted through JoSAA?
NIT seats are allotted through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counselling based on JEE Main rank, category, and preferences filled by students. JoSAA conducts 5 rounds of seat allotment. Students must register at josaa.nic.in, fill choices in order of preference, and lock choices before each round deadline.
