All NIT seats are allotted through JoSAA counselling using JEE Main ranks.

Category-wise reservation in NITs follows the central government policy: General (UR) – 40.5%, OBC-NCL – 27%, SC – 15%, ST – 7.5%, EWS – 10%. Within each category, Home State (HS) seats constitute 50% and Other State (OS) seats constitute the remaining 50%. PwD candidates get 5% supernumerary seats across categories.
Smaller NITs (NIT Manipur, NIT Nagaland, NIT Arunachal Pradesh, NIT Mizoram, NIT Sikkim, NIT Meghalaya, NIT Puducherry) each have around 200–400 seats. These NITs are newer (established post-2009) but offer the same NIT degree and are improving in infrastructure and placements every year. JEE Main ranks of 1,00,000+ can get admission to these NITs in non-CS branches.
