JEE Main vs JEE Advanced – Key Differences Explained

From conducting body and difficulty to attempts, syllabus, and result format — everything compared in one place

The Fundamental Difference

JEE Main is a national-level entrance exam conducted by NTA (National Testing Agency) twice a year. It is the gateway exam for admissions to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs via JoSAA, and also serves as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. Approximately 12–13 lakh candidates appear each year.

JEE Advanced is conducted by one of the IITs on a rotational basis and is the sole criterion for IIT admissions. Only the top ~2.5 lakh candidates from JEE Main are eligible to appear. Around 1.8–2 lakh candidates actually register and take JEE Advanced annually.

Think of JEE Main as the qualifier and JEE Advanced as the actual IIT entrance exam. You need both if you want an IIT — JEE Main rank alone gets you into NITs, not IITs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about JEE Main vs JEE Advanced

1
Which is harder — JEE Main or JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced is significantly harder than JEE Main. JEE Main tests straightforward application of concepts with mostly single-correct MCQs and numerical questions. JEE Advanced features multi-correct MCQs, matching questions, and problems requiring synthesis of multiple concepts simultaneously. Historically, average scores in JEE Advanced are much lower relative to the maximum marks than in JEE Main.
2
Can I get into an IIT with only JEE Main, without JEE Advanced?
No. IIT admission requires clearing JEE Advanced. JEE Main rank alone cannot get you into any IIT. JEE Main is used for NIT, IIIT, and GFTI admissions. To get into an IIT, you must first qualify in JEE Main (top ~2.5 lakh rank), then appear for and clear JEE Advanced, and then participate in JoSAA counselling with your JEE Advanced rank.
3
How many attempts are allowed for JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced allows a maximum of 2 attempts, and they must be in consecutive years. If you appear for JEE Advanced 2025, your second and final attempt is JEE Advanced 2026. You cannot skip a year and come back — consecutive appearance is mandatory for the second attempt to count within the limit.
4
Are JEE Main and JEE Advanced syllabus the same?
The topics are similar — Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from Class 11 and 12. However, JEE Advanced goes deeper. Problems in JEE Advanced require applying multiple concepts simultaneously, understanding edge cases, and creative problem-solving. JEE Main tests standard application within individual chapters, while JEE Advanced tests integration across topics.
5
When is JEE Main exam vs JEE Advanced exam?
JEE Main 2026 has two sessions: Session 1 in January 2026 and Session 2 in April 2026. JEE Advanced 2026 is on May 18, 2026 (confirmed date). There is roughly a 3–4 week gap between JEE Main Session 2 result and JEE Advanced, during which shortlisted candidates must register for JEE Advanced.
