How Many Attempts Are Allowed in JEE Main?

JEE Main allows 3 consecutive years from your first attempt year. Since there are 2 sessions per year, the maximum total attempts are 6. There is no age limit for JEE Main.

JEE Main Attempt Limit – Full Details

According to NTA rules, a candidate can appear in JEE Main for a maximum of 3 consecutive years. The clock starts from the year of their first attempt — not from the year they passed 12th grade.

Since NTA conducts JEE Main in two sessions every year (Session 1 in January/February and Session 2 in April), a candidate who uses all three years has a total of 6 sessions to attempt.

Age Limit for JEE Main

NTA has removed the age limit for JEE Main. Candidates of any age can register and appear — as long as they meet the qualification requirement (passed or appearing in Class 12 or equivalent exam). This means there is no upper age bar for JEE Main.

However, this does NOT apply to IIT admissions via JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced has an age restriction: you must have been born on or after October 1, 2001 to appear in JEE Advanced 2026. So while you can give JEE Main at any age, if you are over-age for JEE Advanced, you will not be able to get into IITs.

What Counts as an Attempt?

An attempt is counted only when you actually appear and submit the exam. If you registered but did not appear on the exam day, it is not counted as an attempt. Both sessions in a year count separately as attempts, so appearing in Session 1 2024 and Session 2 2024 would consume two of your six total attempts.

Strategy: How Many Attempts to Use?

Most students aim to maximize their best score by appearing in both sessions each year. Session 1 (January) gives you an early benchmark and early results; Session 2 (April) is your second chance that year. Data shows that approximately 60–70% of students improve their percentile when they appear in both sessions.

More questions about JEE Main eligibility and attempts

1
Can I appear in JEE Main after 2 years of gap after 12th?
Yes, there is no restriction on gap years for JEE Main. You can appear any number of years after your 12th as long as you are within the 3-consecutive-year window from your first attempt. If you never attempted before, you can start fresh.
2
Does appearing in JEE Main count as an attempt even if I don't submit?
Yes. Once you appear and submit the exam (even with blank answers), it counts as an attempt. However, simply registering and not appearing does NOT count as an attempt.
3
Is there an age limit for JEE Main 2026?
No. NTA removed the age limit for JEE Main. Candidates of any age can appear in JEE Main. However, for JEE Advanced (IIT admission), there is an age limit: candidates born on or after October 1, 2001 are eligible for JEE Advanced 2026.
4
If I first appeared in 2024, how many more attempts do I have?
If your first attempt was in 2024 (Session 1 or 2), you can attempt in 2024, 2025, and 2026 — a total of 3 years, 6 sessions. After 2026, you are no longer eligible for JEE Main.
5
Does a dropper get the same number of attempts?
Yes. A dropper gets the same 3-consecutive-year rule. If a dropper's first attempt was in 2025 (after taking a gap year post-2024 12th), they can attempt in 2025, 2026, and 2027.
