Does JEE Main Require 75% in Class 12?

The JEE Main exam itself has NO 75% requirement — anyone can appear regardless of Class 12 marks. However, for ADMISSION to IITs, NITs, IIITs via JoSAA, you must have 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST). You can give JEE Main without 75%, but cannot get NIT/IIT admission.

The 75% Rule: What It Applies To

This is one of the most commonly misunderstood eligibility rules. Many students believe they cannot register for JEE Main without 75% — but that is incorrect. The rule applies only to admission, not the exam itself.

The Alternative: Top 20 Percentile

If you do not have 75% aggregate in Class 12, you can still qualify for NIT/IIT admission if you are in the top 20 percentile of your respective board in the Class 12 examination. NTA/JoSAA publishes the top 20 percentile cutoff for each state board every year.

For example, if CBSE's top 20 percentile cutoff is 91%, you need either 75% or 91%+ (whichever is lower). For boards with high averages, 75% may actually be more lenient than the 20 percentile cutoff.

What If You Are Appearing in Class 12?

Students appearing in Class 12 in the same year can register for JEE Main. At the time of JoSAA counselling, they need to present their final Class 12 marksheet showing the required percentage. If marks are not available by then (late board results), provisional admission may be granted, subject to final verification.

Practical Advice

If you are currently in Class 12 and worried about the 75% rule, focus on scoring well in board exams alongside JEE preparation. A student with 74% in boards and a 98 percentile in JEE Main may still miss NIT admission — so boards matter even for engineering entrance. Target at least 80%+ to be safe.

More questions about JEE Main 75% rule and eligibility

1
What happens if I have less than 75% in 12th but qualify JEE Advanced?
If you qualify JEE Advanced and get a rank, but have less than 75% in Class 12 (or less than 65% for SC/ST), you will NOT be eligible for seat allotment in IITs through JoSAA. Your JEE Advanced qualification is valid, but admission requires meeting the 75% criterion.
2
Is the 75% rule applicable for NITs and IIITs too?
Yes. The 75% minimum marks rule (65% for SC/ST) applies to admissions at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA counselling. Without 75%, you cannot be considered for seat allotment at these institutes.
3
Can I appear in JEE Main without 75% in Class 12?
Yes. The 75% requirement is only for ADMISSION — not for appearing in JEE Main. You can register and appear in JEE Main regardless of your Class 12 percentage. The eligibility check happens at the time of counselling.
4
What if I am from a state board that grades differently?
The 75% criterion is applied to the aggregate of the 5 subjects counted in the qualifying examination (Class 12). For state boards, the percentage is calculated based on their board's official marking pattern. If your board doesn't give aggregate %, NTA checks the percentage of best 5 subjects.
5
Is there an alternative to 75% for NIT admission?
Yes. If you do not have 75%, you can still qualify if you are in the top 20 percentile of your respective board (in the Class 12 exam). This is the alternative criterion. For example, if the top 20 percentile cutoff for your board is 72%, then 72% is sufficient for you.
