How Many Attempts Are Allowed in JEE Advanced?

JEE Advanced allows a maximum of 2 attempts in 2 consecutive years. If you appeared in JEE Advanced 2025, you can attempt again in 2026 (your second and final attempt). Accepting an IIT seat permanently ends your JEE Advanced eligibility.

JEE Advanced vs. JEE Main — Different Attempt Rules

JEE Main allows 3 years × 2 sessions = 6 attempts. JEE Advanced is far more restrictive: only 2 attempts in 2 consecutive years. This means if you did not perform well in your first JEE Advanced, you get exactly one more chance. There is no flexibility to skip years and attempt later.

Additionally, getting into an IIT ends your JEE Advanced attempts permanently, unlike JEE Main where NIT/IIIT admission does not affect future JEE Main eligibility (within the 3-year window).

Strategic Use of Your 2 Attempts

Most top IIT candidates use their first attempt as a learning experience (Class 12 year or first drop year) and peak in their second attempt after a dedicated drop year. IIT toppers predominantly come from the 2nd attempt. If you are in your second and final attempt, use the first attempt data (paper analysis, weak topics) to plan your preparation meticulously.

Frequently Asked Questions

More questions about JEE Advanced eligibility and attempts

1
If I skip JEE Advanced one year, do I lose an attempt?
No. Skipping a year (not registering for JEE Advanced) does not count as an attempt. The 2-attempt limit counts only actual appearances. However, the years must be consecutive from your first JEE Advanced attempt year. If you appeared in 2025, your second attempt can be in 2026 — you cannot skip to 2027.
2
What happens to JEE Advanced eligibility if I accept an IIT seat?
If you accept an IIT seat through JoSAA and join an IIT, you permanently lose JEE Advanced eligibility. This means you cannot re-appear in JEE Advanced in subsequent years, even if you have unused attempts. However, candidates who got an IIT seat but did not report to the IIT may retain eligibility — check official rules carefully.
3
Can I attempt JEE Advanced after a 1-year drop?
Yes, if you are within your eligible attempts. If you appeared in JEE Advanced 2025 for the first time, you can attempt JEE Advanced 2026 (second attempt). If you first appeared in JEE Advanced 2024, you could attempt 2025 — your 2026 attempt would only be valid if you had NOT appeared in 2025.
4
Is there an age limit for JEE Advanced?
Yes. Candidates must have been born on or after October 1, 2001 (for General/OBC-NCL category in JEE Advanced 2026). SC/ST/PwD candidates get 5-year relaxation: born on or after October 1, 1996. This age limit is different from JEE Main which has no age limit.
5
How many students qualify for JEE Advanced each year?
NTA selects the top 2.5 lakh unique candidates from JEE Main (category-wise) who meet the JEE Advanced eligibility criteria. Out of these, typically around 1.5–1.8 lakh actually register and appear in JEE Advanced. In 2026, 56,880 candidates qualified (met the minimum marks threshold) out of those who appeared.
