How does JoSAA counselling work? Complete process explained

JoSAA Counselling Process - Complete Guide:

What is JoSAA?

  • Joint Seat Allocation Authority
  • Conducts counselling for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs
  • Single platform for all admissions

Step 1: Registration

  • Online registration after JEE Advanced results
  • Fill personal details, preferences
  • Pay registration fee (₹35,000 for General, ₹15,000 for SC/ST)
  • Upload documents

Step 2: Choice Filling

  • Fill institutes and branches in order of preference
  • Can fill as many choices as you want
  • Research before filling (check cutoffs, placements)
  • Important: Lock choices before deadline

Step 3: Seat Allotment (Rounds)

  • 6 rounds of seat allocation
  • Allotment based on:

- Your rank

- Category

- Filled preferences

- Seat availability

Step 4: Acceptance & Fee Payment

  • Check allotment result online
  • "Accept" the seat within deadline
  • Pay seat acceptance fee (same as registration fee)
  • Choose option: Freeze, Float, or Slide

Options Explained:

  • Freeze: Happy with allotted seat, won't participate in further rounds
  • Float: Want better branch in same institute, can be upgraded
  • Slide: Want better branch in same or higher preferred institute

Step 5: Document Verification

  • Visit reporting center with documents
  • Verify original certificates
  • Get provisional admission letter

Step 6: Final Admission

  • Report to allotted institute
  • Complete admission formalities
  • Pay remaining fees
  • Start classes!

Important Tips:

  • Fill choices carefully - once locked, cannot be changed
  • Research cutoffs of previous years
  • Don't just focus on IITs, good NITs are excellent too
  • Accept seat even if not satisfied - you can float in next rounds
  • Don't lose registration fee - participate until satisfied

Documents Required:

  • JEE Advanced scorecard
  • Class 10 & 12 mark sheets
  • Category certificate (if applicable)
  • Passport size photographs
  • ID proof
