What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?

Key Differences Between JEE Main and JEE Advanced:

Purpose:

  • JEE Main: Qualifying exam for JEE Advanced + admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs
  • JEE Advanced: Admission to IITs only

Conducting Authority:

  • JEE Main: National Testing Agency (NTA)
  • JEE Advanced: One of the IITs (rotating)

Difficulty Level:

  • JEE Main: Moderate (tests basics and application)
  • JEE Advanced: Highly advanced (tests deep understanding, analytical skills)

Syllabus:

  • JEE Main: CBSE Class 11 & 12 syllabus
  • JEE Advanced: Similar but includes some extra topics from Class 11

Exam Pattern:

  • JEE Main: MCQs + Numerical value (single correct answer)
  • JEE Advanced: MCQs (single/multiple correct), Numerical, Match the following, Comprehension-based

Number of Attempts:

  • JEE Main: 3 consecutive years
  • JEE Advanced: 2 consecutive years (only in the year of appearing 12th and next year)

Rank vs Marks:

  • JEE Main: 100 marks = ~95-99 percentile
  • JEE Advanced: 100 marks = ~5000-10000 rank

Qualification:

  • JEE Main: No minimum marks required to qualify
  • JEE Advanced: Top 2.5 lakh candidates from JEE Main qualify

Seat Acceptance:

  • JEE Main: ~25,000 seats (NITs+IIITs+GFTIs)
  • JEE Advanced: ~16,000 seats (IITs only)
